NY Designer Vivienne Tam, who is from China, kicked off the Chinese New Year during
NYFW with her AW13 collection. She got inspired by the world around her with heavy
influences stemming from pop culture and embracing everyday life. Front row included
Carmen Electra and Angela Simmons.
Dominated by red and black, the collection fused non-nonsense frocks with punky
elements like exposed zippers and the use of leather. Plaids and enlarged houndstooth
patterns added a unique quality to seasonal fabrics like wool. A president
Obama print made a statement of style mixed with politics, as did one featuring
script penned by Chairman Mao.
Fitted feminine forms became more serious
as ensembles consisting of turtleneck paired with pegged pants. The aesthetic
was freshened when skirted at the knee. Hair styled with edge, and black lipstick
helped enliven the spirit of the pieces.
