Fashion Ledge - Chado Ralph Rucci

Ralph Rucci

Ralph Rucci has been designing both ready-to-wear and made-to-order clothing for over 20 years. In 1994 he opened his current business, Chado Ralph Rucci. "Chado" is the name of the Japanese tea ceremony, a traditional ritual that has been practiced in Japan for centuries. The essence of chado is respect, tranquility, grace, and integrity; Rucci chose this word to represent the qualities he wished to evoke and explore through fashion, as well as to symbolize the unity and dedication of the talented staff that he has developed throughout the years.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rucci received Bachelor's degrees in philosophy and literature from Temple University before moving to New York, where he studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Throughout his career, he has participated in many different aspects of the fashion industry, and his work has always centered on luxurious women's apparel. Rucci's business in based in New York, but he works with an international team of specialists, including the world's finest embroidery houses. For several years, he has been developing fabrics with luxury mills throughout Europe, either by using advances in technology to create new textiles, or by studying archives in order to revive historically important cloths. Rucci's prints are based on his own artwork, primarily consisting of watercolors and acrylics. He draws inspiration from art, as well, ranging from classic Renaissance works to those of contemporary artists such as Cy Twombly, Francis Bacon and Joseph Beuys.

By working with distinguished retailers in select locations, and traveling throughout the country for trunk shows and personal appearances, Rucci has grown his ready-to-wear business and built a solid customer base of loyal followers. In 2002, Rucci was invited by the Chambre Syndicate de la Haute Couture to show his first Haute Couture collection. He is the first American to be included on the calendar since Mainbocher. "In my workroom, as in my thoughts, there is little difference between couture and ready-to-wear," says Rucci. “What I find most important is that we strive to create a product that is empowering, and works with the spiritual essence of a woman."

Rucci is currently planning to distribute his ready-to-wear internationally and develop additional product lines that will compliment his existing collections.
