Every season there is one showcase that is refreshing, not because of the fabulous clothes, but because of the message behind the showcase. This season Designers For Darfur is that showcase. Its message is simple: Save Darfur. Alex Meixner/ Communications & Legislative Coordinator for the Save Darfur Coalition gave some insight into the cause. According Meixner, one of the coalition’s aims is to encourage military intervention by the United States in the Darfur region. He also mentioned that the coalition wants to encourage the average person to take a stance on the situation (the coalition offers some suggestions on its website www.savedarfur.org). Meixner pointed out that while official numbers are difficult to verify, the coalition estimates that over 400,000 people have died in Darfur!
Designers for Darfur was founded by designer Malcolm Harris and model Lydia Hearst in association with Fashion Television and presenting sponsor Steve Madden. For this amazing event nearly 100 of America’s leading designers, including Marc Jacobs, Joanna Mastroianni, Anait Bian, Jackie Rogers, Anand Jon, Traver Rains and Richie Rich of Heatherette and Donna Karan, created one of a kind ensembles in Red, Yellow, Green or Black (or any combination of these symbolic colors of Africa) to be featured in the show. The fashion industry’s top models, hair and make-up artists as well as wardrobe stylists also donated their time, talent and assistance to the cause.
Patti LaBelle, Fonzworth Bentley, Michelle Rodriguez, Fabiola Beracasa, Christy Scott Cashman, Robert Verdi, Carol Alt, Janice Combs, Oksana Baul, Melissa Berkelhammer, Alison Minton, Kathleen Giordano, Dr. Eric Berger, Julie Haus and Collette were all on hand to show their support and commitment toward ending the genocide currently taking place in Darfur.
All of the donated looks are being auctioned off on eBay at www.ebay.com/designersfordarfur rotating at intervals of 30 ensembles. The second interval of ensembles will go up for auction on February 23rd, 2007. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Save Darfur Coalition.
