For someone who was born into the very era he is designing, the ease with which Alexander Wang’s vision came to life is astonishing. Wang’s Fall 2007 collection - - filled with leather hats, oversized, but fitted silhouettes and gold lame - - is analogous with 80s trends and 90s Hip-Hop video, with a modern twist.
Pants as tight as leggings, shrunken sweatshirts, acid-washed flair, high-waisted tweed pants, gold accents and suspenders flanked the heavily-lit black runway. There was no doubt the inspiration stemmed from Madonna’s Golden Years - - of which this native Californian-turned-New-Yorker only had pictures.
Boundless gaits paraded to INXS’ Need You Tonight and Technotronic’s Pump Up the Jam, as the cadence and Navan Vanilla Liqueur drinks unwound the audience. Nothing less expected, coming from a young, 20-something designer who left Parsons school early to pursue this label. There is nothing sophomoric about Alexander Wang’s fall collection. No one could have resurrected the 80s better…not even Vh1.
