Victor de Souza was born into a royal Portuguese family in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was first introduced to fashion through his grandmother’s closet, which was filled with an elegant collection by designers such as, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Chanel and Schiaparelli. Seduced by the tapered silhouettes and the brilliant colors of the rich fabrics, de Souza knew at an early age that design was his calling.
Although his new found passion was frowned upon by his family, he found a way to act upon his desire to design by hand sewing garments for his sisters and their dolls from ordinary bed linens. At the age of fourteen Victor de Souza enrolled in the French haute Couture Academy. There he quickly acquired a reputation as a perfectionist because of his obsession with constructing garments that fit the form perfectly. He designed his first collection by the age of eighteen.
In 1998 Victor de Souza moved to New York and quickly learned to adjust his couture designing techniques to cater to the more relaxed American market by taking garment construction classes at Parson’s School of Design. In October 2002 de Souza made his debut at Paris Fashion Week. Which was held at the American Consulate, as part of a special group event entitled, “American’s in Paris.” That same year editors and stylists began noticing his designs when multi-platinum singer, Alicia Keys, appeared at the 2002 NFL kick-off party in Times Square in one of de Souza’s signature corsets. Other famous personalities such as, Mary J. Blige, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker soon began to appear in his clothing.
Additionally in 2002, GEN ART, a non-profit organization that supports up and coming talent, selected Victor de Souza to participate in their Fall/ Winter 2003 fashion show. He concluded that year by being the only American designer chosen by the multimillion-dollar company, DOW, to represent them at the Premier International Textile Exhibition. At that event he designed an entire collection using the company’s newest fiber.
In 2004 Victor de Souza teamed up with Arelis Bonilla, to launch the Victor de Souza Ready-to-Wear collection. De Souza’s collections are committed to make a woman feel sexy by capitalizing on the many of beauty and exciting the senses. His silhouettes are elegant and sexy, his colors are vibrant and his fabrics add just the right about of glamour. Victor de Souza introduced his first RTW collection in the fall of 2004 for spring of 2005. On September 9, 2005 victor held his second most successful fashion show in the tents at Bryant Park within the style lounge for Spring/Summer 2006.
