We were surprised and delighted that Mr. Todd Smith aka LL Cool J made a leap into the design arena. We were equally surprised and delighted that he has gone the high-end route for his autumn / winter fall 2006 men’s collection and his autumn / winter fall 2006 women’s collection under the Todd Smith umbrella. We have nothing against sports apparel, which is often associated with Rap celebs, but in light of LL’s growth as an artist, model, and actor, we think the Todd Smith look is quite fitting.
The collection evoked a laid back cocktail hour or Hollywood outing and LL’s presentation mirrored this feeling with its endless deluge of champagne, celebrity punch and hors d'oeuvres. The collection is all about the hidden persona that we embody - - in this case, the persona that enjoys finer things in life. The emerald plisse cocktail dress captured this mood best as it simply danced before our eyes. A pearl cashmere low waist shirt jacket on top of gray plaid tulip cuff pants also caught our attention. LL achieved a rare understanding of the female silhouette when it came to his women’s pieces.
Nonetheless, the men’s side was still much stronger. The cuts were very European and manly. We loved the fur lined gray cashmere overcoat paired with a pink prince of whales check shirt and an Italian pink strip tie along with windowpane trousers. The natural crocodile jacket was charming as was the Russian sable pullover paired with a silver cashmere herringbone turtleneck.
“LL” stands for “ladies love” and with this offering, ladies will love a man in Todd Smith.
