Typically in the fall season, one gets accustomed to dark, mysterious colors as a reflection of the fall season. The Youco fall 2006 collection deviates from this norm. The collection has a light, almost whimsical feel to it. A canary Knightsbridge dress carried this mood best - - as it glided past us, we were reminded of the first time we fell in love.
Romance aside, there is a corporate sophistication to this collection as well. A bakerloo jacket paired with oxford trousers will have women feeling chic in the workplace. For this collection, Youco’s strongest suit is the women’s collection, but our eyebrows were raised when we glanced at the Hammersmith jacket, Westminster shirt and Dalston trouser ensemble for the men. Men will appreciate its unforced casualness especially in the new tech work environment where there is such a fine line between casual and sloppy.
Youco began her studies in painting at an art college in Japan, where she ultimately became interested in fashion design. After graduating from art school, she relocated to London and studied at Central Saint Martins before transferring to the London College of Fashion. Her 2003 graduation collection received press from the Daily Telegraph, and garnered her a job offer from TOCCA LLC in New York.
She relocated to NYC in 2003, and took on an assistant designer position at TOCCA, which she held for year and a half, before designing the collection under the direction of the owner. She left TOCCA after the S/S 2006 collection, and launched her own line this fall, called YOUCO.
