Gaya Handbags

by Amanda Dawson

Gaya's creative and eclectic handbags have been spreading around the world from Europe, Asia, and across North America for six years now. Each design is created in limited numbers, ensuring uniqueness and quality for the style hunter who wants an original piece. Created in Vancouver by three sisters, Angela, Sally, and Wei-Wei Chang, Gaya has grown from a small accessories company to an internationally identifiable design house. Gaya handbags have been featured in fashion magazines worldwide, as well as on websites, television, and in feature films.

I chatted with Wei Wei Chang, Gaya's head designer about the upcoming collection:

Let's talk about your current fall collection. What were your inspirations?
This season, we've taken inspirations from nature's organic forms, transforming them into geometric yet sculptural shapes as the base of our bags. We want to give the organic forms we're all familiar with a modernistic edge. Using as little hardware as we can, draping out floral patterns with fabric, creating light yet stylish handbags.

Do you agree that the economic times call for minimalist designs?
Minimalist designs tend to give people the feeling that things are lighter, simpler, and more relaxed, so perhaps it is a suitable style to aim for in stressful times like these.

Give us three words that best describe the brand.
Sophisticated, Modern, Feminine.

Who is your ideal customer and why?

What currently do you think are the biggest trends of 2009?
A soft roomy bag, a pair of over-the-knee boots.

What trends are you seriously tired of?
Leave your comfortable yoga pants home

What's next for Gaya Handbags?
I am currently working on S/S 2010 collection and it's very exciting as Gaya is getting a brand new image from logo to website.
