Phax “Super Sonic” Swimwear

by Sofroina Timmons
If I think of throwback music from the 80’s, JJ Fad’s single “Super Sonic” reminds me of roller skates, fashionable large gold earrings, baby-doll trends, neon colors, oversized sweatshirts with spandex tights and sneakers, teased hair donned with fedoras and shoulder-carrying boom boxes.

And if you’re looking to capture some of the 80’s fashion on or off the water - you’ll enjoy Phax Swimwear line “Sunshine Fiesta”. It harkens to a Miami 80’s vibe of fun, bright neon colors, symbolically mimicking Miami Beach’s night life, and art deco architecture that can be worn to any poolside, or beach-worthy occasion.

Founder and designer Maria Gutirrez was inspired to create her swimwear line Phax while working at a local company as a clothing designer 25 years ago. Her staple line boasts sexy exciting colorful prints in trend-setting cuts and styles ranging from one-piece, bikinis and separates, triangle tops to bandeaus. The cover-ups are just as luxurious - harem pants, tunics, rompers and dresses that fit the bill from day-to-night!

This summer I’m definitely going to find my 80’s muse with Phax Swimwear.

You titled the collection “Sunshine Fiesta” – explain.
Sunshine Fiesta is a colorful collection that will transport you to Miami Beach in the 1980´s. We were inspired by the art deco architecture, bright neon colors, Miami nightlife, and beach culture. In our collection you will find exciting, colorful prints that will mix with sexy styles and vibrant tones that invite you to a sun-soaked soiree you don’t want to miss.

Who do you envision wearing this Phax collection?
Sunshine Fiesta was designed for the young professional, city savvy, fun-loving woman. She loves sunshine, beaches, adventure, and fashion. The swimwear collection is versatile so you can wear our swimwear and cover ups for ocean-side fun, poolside parties, or lunch on the boardwalk with friends.

Say more about your inspirations.
Each year Phax launches two collections – a main collection and a cruise/resort collection. For the cruise/resort collection, we wanted SUNSHINE FIESTA to express fun, sun-filled vacations and a perfect beach destination. The design team created an inspiration based on BIO DYNAMIC, a WGSN 2015 trend report story. We took this information from the WGSN report and merged it with our own culture and inspirations to create this new and vibrant collection.

Are your designs interchangeable?
It was important to create pieces that could be interchangeable and reversible. We want our swimwear to be worn in multiple ways to create a variety of looks and styles. We encourage women to mix and match patterns together or with solids. We also have three different types of bottoms and three different styles of tops in order to create a multitude of looks but also fit the unique body types of women.

Do you have any personal do’s and don’ts when choosing a swimsuit?
Do – speak to a swimwear specialist and take the time to learn about the right swimsuit for you.
Do – try new shapes and designs. It’s fun to learn that you love animal print or a bandeau top when all this time you thought you were a solids lover who only wore triangles!
Don’t – Buy too small. Your body is a beautiful shape that shouldn’t be shoved into a too small size that messes up your form.

Is there a body type that your suits work well with?
If you feel great in our suit, then it fits you. I don’t think there is one body type for any given brand. Whether you are 5 feet tall, like myself, or 6 feet tall, our suits are going to look great on you.

As a follow-up, can you give our readers some tips for specific body types?
There are definitely shapes that we create for specific types of bums, chests, thighs, etc. If you are large chested, the bandeau top looks beautiful on you. If you need more support, the halter provides a great sexy V-Shape for your cleavage while keeping your breasts in the right spot (and not popping out of the suit!). For myself, I am very petite and hourglass shaped. I love to wear a high-cut bottom to make my legs look longer and a triangle or bandeau top is perfect for me.

Does this line offer cover-ups, sundresses, resort wear or loungewear?
We want to outfit you for the entire experience you have on the beach. We offer caftans, cover-ups, shawls, sundresses, and hats. Our cover-ups are light with details like embroidery or beading. One of my favorites that we carry in the Sunshine Fiesta collection is our coral colored romper. I love throwing the romper on over my swimsuit and grabbing lunch at a beach café.

What are the biggest mistakes people make when buying/wearing/caring for swimsuits?
I once saw a woman on the beach wearing a triangle top upside down. It’s important to know the versatility of your swimsuit but also the proper way to tie, fold, and adjust.

How does the "eco-conscious" movement affect your brand?
We encourage women to recycle their old swimsuits when they decide to upgrade or add to their collection. We believe that there is a responsibility that we all have to manage resources and materials used in our products. All of our swimsuits are hand-made in Medellin, Colombia where we believe in supporting the local economy and reducing our carbon footprint.

Where can Sunshine Fiesta be purchased and what are the price points?
Visit our website: www.phaxswimwearusa.comto find a local retailer or purchase online. Our swimwear pieces ranges from $35 - $150.

What's next for Phax?
We are going to focus more on the urban design trend, mixing of patterns on a single suit, and the influence of the digital world on fashion.
