This Summer ‘She Bangs!'

by Sofroina Timmons
Got a summer riddle for you: “What’s a tee have in common with a swimsuit?” Before 2005, absolutely nothing! Then came Beth Gerharts who decided to design an amazing one-of-a-kind badass “Teekini” out of an AC/DC shirt after being invited to a boat party off the coast of Miami.

Unlike the rest of us gals, Betty didn’t settle for another suit off the rack, she used her resources, as always, and decided to create her suit not knowing her design would evolve into a swimsuit company called Betty Bangs Signature “Teekinis”. Each of her Teekinis is stylishly embellished one-by-one with hundreds of Swarovski Crystals and stamped inside of each suit is a unique limited edition number.

Each American made shirt is cut-to-order from pre-shrunk cotton t-shirts. Not digging the cotton, don’t fret! In 2009, Betty introduced her first line of bikinis in lycra fabric. Just like the Teekinis, this line is also limited edition and American made. I absolutely love these Teekinis, they fit my bum perfectly. I am usually stopping traffic occasionally, now I’m receiving standing ovations on-and-off the sand. I LOVE YOU BETTY!! #Gotoswimsuits

Who do you envision wearing Betty Bangs?
I'll quote Kermit the Frog on this one...The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me.

How do you remain competitive in this market?
I think I remain competitive because I have a unique product. I offer limited edition and custom pieces, not a lot of companies do that these days.

What was your inspiration for your spring 2014 collection?
Cowboys and Indians. I'm a big fan of Outlaw Country (Waylon Jennings, Hank (all 3 of 'em), David Allen Coe, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Whitey Morgan, etc.), the Wild West, and Native American practices. All my newer suits reflect that. Whether they are actually Teekinis made from these artists or by the colors and prints.

Are your designs interchangeable?
Most of the pieces are interchangeable. Almost all the tops look amazing with some of my basics like the "Billie Jean Bottom" or "Black Butter Bottom".

What types of features are incorporated in your designs?
I like to design pieces that flatter the body so I incorporate sewing techniques, fabrics, and elastic that don't cut into the body and create "muffin top" or make unflattering indentions in the skin. My scrunch-butt backs are amazing! I curve them at the top in a sort of heart-shape, which really enhances backsides of all shapes and sizes.

As a follow-up, can you give our readers some tips for specific body types?
I encourage my customers to accentuate their stronger points so it takes away from their weaker ones. I also tell them not to be afraid to try something new. Different cuts give the illusion of more proportioned silhouettes.

Is there a body type that your suits work well with?
Definitely a fit, toned body looks best in my suits but even more than a specific "body type," confidence is what looks best in my suits.

What makes a swimsuit sexy?
Hands down, I think the fit of a swimsuit is what truly makes a swimsuit sexy. When a swimsuit enhances the curves of the woman wearing it exudes sexy.

Do you have any personal dos and don’ts when choosing a swimsuit?
I do not do "granny pants". There is nothing that bothers me more than seeing a beautiful woman wearing a bikini with a huge sagging back! I believe a bikini is supposed to enhance the female form, not cover it up completely.

Where can Betty Bangs be purchased and what are the price points?
Prices range from $90 to $265 and [suits] can be purchased online at

Do you have any social media campaigns or promotions that we should know about?
Betty Bangs LOVES social media and will be doing some Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram promotions throughout the summer. You can find Betty Bangs on, on Instagram @bettybangsbikinis, and on Twitter @bettybangs.
