Why Accessories? Never Be Limited In Your Originality!

by Kenyatta D. Pious
I was so impressed with Patrick Martin (founder of YB Limited) and his involvement in YB Timepieces when we first chatted a few years back that I purchased a sleek time piece, which I still wear to this day. Fast forward a few years and Martin is back with a new venture, part of the holy trinity of fashion accessories: handbags! For the record, shoes and jewelry would complete the trinity.

Martin notes that: The handbags are a collaboration between Martin Marino and YB Limited and are sold under the YB Limited label. Martin Marino is a new luxury handbag line that will be launching its high end collection in the coming months. We formed a partnership with this label because they are uniquely positioned to produce high quality and affordable handcrafted handbags for our YB label.

We are thrilled to take you inside the mind of Martin and put this nascent brand on your radar – we are also pleased to offer an exclusive giveaway opportunity at the bottom of the article. And if you know anything about Patrick Martin, you should know that he will leave no stone unturned to present a product that women will covet for years to come.

How did you make the transition to handbags and why?
We saw that there were synergies amongst to the two product lines with our customers. Women who wore our watches were also interested in unique designer handbags that were one of a kind similar to our watch line. The value proposition that we offer with our handbags are that each one is handcrafted and produced in Italy with premium Italian leather, so you’re getting a unique high quality bag that will last a life time.

Do you have any personal dos and don’ts for people when they look for handbags?
In my opinion I believe that you want to make sure the quality is there as well as a style that compliments your taste. From a functional standpoint you want to make sure the bag is comfortable to carry and is not too heavy. You also want to make sure that the bag has enough space to carry your belongings and for those who understand the quality and craftsmanship of Italian made bags, you should look for the made in Italy label.

Who would you want to see rocking the bags?
I would like to see Michelle Obama rocking the bag because she represents elements of the bags: premium quality, sophisticated, fashionable, pragmatic and classy. I think one of our bags would look great on her shoulder.

What was the hardest thing about designing the collection?
Designing the collection is a very tedious process because you want to make sure the vision of what you’re producing really comes to life. So that involves ensuring that the cuts, stitching and accessories are produced in a way that reflects your design vision. From a manufacturing standpoint, this can be challenging because you have to make sure that you have the right materials and that the production is exactly what you’re looking for. We are fortunate to be able to work with the Martin Marino team to ensure that this step in the process is done correctly.

Do you prefer a lot of hardware on handbags or do you prefer a minimal design?
Most of our customers prefer minimal hardware or just enough to accentuate the design. We use premium Italian leather for our handbags so we do not want to take away from that feature. Also, hardware can break over time depending on how the bag is used over time so we want to minimize this risk. Our leather is durable and long lasting which is the key to having a great bag.

How important are price points to you?
Price points are very important to us because we appeal to a value conscious consumer. It is our goal to meet our customer’s needs by keep our price points accessible and moderate while delivering on unmatched quality.

Are there any upcoming events with your brand?
We are working on some events later in the year where we will feature some of our new designs. It’s always a great opportunity to connect our brand with our customers in an event format. This is really an opportunity for us to give our customers a unique experience.

What are your trend predictions for next season?
We are seeing more exotic leathers at trend shows so my prediction is that we may see more European style hobo and shoulder bags with exotic leathers. This says high fashion and can set your bag apart from others styles.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
I like collaborating with people who inspire me. We’ve collaborated with Hill Harper and we are working on some things with Andy Vargas from Carlos Santana band. I’ve always been a fan of music and we seek to work with those who support our brand and like what we are doing.

What book are you reading right now?
I’m reading a book by Warren Buffet and I just finished Hill Harper's Wealth Cure. You can’t go wrong with the knowledge and insight that you can gain from these two as an entrepreneur. While they are not fashion related, they teach me about wisdom and strategy that can transcend across any discipline so this is always good.

What are three things you couldn’t live without?
I really like the team I’m working with. Outside of work, they’ve been a big part of my personal life because they are real people who embody my values such as hard work, discipline, loyalty, sacrifice and a self-less team attitude. In addition to that I would say entrepreneurship and my close loved ones.

Tell us two people past or present you would love to meet and what you would ask them?
I would like to meet Steve Stout and get his take on his vision for the market. I would also like to meet Ermenegildo Zegna to learn more about his inspiration for designing.

What do you have on the backburner for the brand that you can share?
We are at the very early stages of developing an Italian made apparel line. We see some opportunities for this in the market and I think it will be a great compliment to our brand as we continue to grow and develop. We are also at the very early stages of setting up some sales opportunities in Europe so we hope to gain traction there over the next several months.

Are there any cross-promotion opportunities that you are pushing for or looking to execute?
Right now we are looking to cross promote with our brand partners in addition to that we are seeking a female spokes model.

Where can people shop for the collection and do you have any social media campaigns/promotions that we should know about?
We are currently selling online and we are targeting some boutiques in various locations here in the US. Our current sales have been direct to customers through some of our sales reps who have relationships with these customers. Customers can contact us directly and we can arrange to show them the bags.
