Moving Fashion Forward With Time

by Sofroina Timmons
What do you see when you incorporate accessories from Britain and Japan? One of the best and exciting fashion-forward designs from TOKYObay - - that’s what! Head designer, Dory Isaac, and business partner, Jun Kobayashi, joined forces to create a highly coveted brand in the accessory market. Isaac’s extensive experience in fashion and Kobayashi’s knowledge in importing aesthetic Japanese accessories helped the duo to build a lengthy reputation based on quality and uniqueness in the accessory market.

Recently, TOKYObay introduced Argent, a line of sterling silver and 9 ct. rose gold overlay pendant necklaces. These are one-of-kind hand crafted designed pendants based on early 1900’s pocket watch fobs collected over time by the designer. As of November 2011, Liberty London, a reputable department store across the pond, started to exclusively feature and sell TOKYObay's fall/winter watch collection in the store and online.

This season TOKYObay is a solid choice for anyone looking for smartly designed watches, bags and clocks at a reasonable price point. We suggest anything from the Best of 20 Years capsule watch collection.

How and why did TOKYObay start and who started it?
I founded TOKYObay in 1991 out of San Francisco with my business partner, Jun Kobayashi. Jun was importing these great Japanese robot clocks and gift items, which I hadn’t really seen in the States before. We helped build these under the TOKYObay label while introducing a comprehensive collection of original fashion accessories, integrating both Jun’s Japanese aesthetic and my British upbringing and love of vintage. Our current collection ranges from bags, watches, clocks and a new vintage inspired jewelry line.

Why did you choose the name TOKYObay?
The TOKYObay name stems from the heart of the business which is the collaboration between Jun and I. He is originally from Tokyo and the brand is based out of the Bay area. Our collection of bags is designed with certain criteria of look, materials and price range for a market of women and men we have cultivated over time. We are most known for our vegan compact pursettes and cross body line which come in some key seasonal colors and subtle detailing.

What are your designers doing to keep up with the competition and to ensure you stand out?
The design team here consists of my partner, Jun and I. We make sure we are creating products that aren’t too precious but have impact and enhance each customers own look. Accessories always do well in a declining economy! Jun and I continue to bring fun, well priced bags that can multi task from day to night, casual to dressy.

We are more of an urban style company that stays true to our design sense and appeals to stylish individuals that look for quality, versatility and fashionable options. We are known for our small pursettes and cross body styles that are easily integrated into the wardrobes of a very broad age range.

What were your inspirations for the current collection?
We are always inspired by quality with a simple understated design. This season is particularly about mixing vintage silhouettes and modern elements together to create something current and every day. There is versatility in many of the bags offering detachable straps for a day cross body and evening clutch look. It’s important our bags don’t feel precious but something that is usable and fashionable at the same time.

What's next for TOKYObay?
Spring 2012 features more of our signature compact sized bags with a 1960’s flavor. Drawstring pouches and bucket shapes will be available in colorful canvas and leathers.

Where can TOKYObay be purchased and what are the price points?
Our full collection is available online at Bags range from $36-$90 and watches range from $75-$150.
