BET 2010 AWARDS

by Odienne Dina Chisolm
The 2010 BET Awards show was by far one of the best in the ten years these annual awards have been running. With Queen Latifah as the host and performances by Alicia Keys, Diddy, T.I., Drake, Ludacris, Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj to name a few, the excitement kept viewers on edge. Kanye West can't be contained for too long! He opened the show with his new hit, Power. The stage looked like a video set with volcanic like mountains all around. Kanye might have a huge ego, but he also has huge creativity and he set a high precedent for the remaining performers of the night. Kanye's monstrous chain and ring came with a larger-than-life price tag. Both items retail for a whopping $300,000, a spokesperson for Jacob & Co. tells Rap-Up.com.

It was a star-studded line up which included Chris Brown who performed a rendition of Michael Jackson's songs through dance. His moves were virtually identical to Michael's and Chris' talent still hasn't reached it's full potential so imagine how great Chris can become. The performance was top notch, but became somewhat somber when Chris started to cry as he tried to belt the words out to Michael's hit, Man in The Mirror. The audience seemed to get emotional as well and BET cut the song short because Chris Brown was in no shape to sing the song at that point. He did an excellent job overall in paying homage to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Rest in peace Michael.

Drake, one of the highly anticipated performers of the night, didn't disappoint with his hit, Over (I'm doing Me). His performance was energetic and he brought out Jeezy to perform his current single, Lose My Mind, another charismatic performance. Diddy, I must say, took the cake. For a veteran in the game, Diddy/Dirty Money took over the stage like they were hungry for a deal. Diddy was moving and shaking like he was 19 while performing Hello Good Morning. When featured guests Rick Ross and especially Nicki Minaj joined Diddy on stage, that put the icing on it.

El DeBarge gave us a blast from the past as he performed medley's of I Like It, All This Love and more. That surprise made every one stand to their feet and sing the songs louder than El.

Prince, finally recognized for all if his hard work and creative talent, was given the Lifetime Achievement award. Alicia Keys and Patti Labelle serenaded the legend. Prince, keeping it consistent with his character, remained grateful and humble. He definitely deserves it, 20+ years in the industry and still rocking it, this award is actually overdue, but better late than never. Good job BET- see you next year!
