Dina's Den

by Odienne Dina Chisolm

There is one thing that brings us all together- MUSIC! Last week, music/entertainment brought together very familiar faces who all performed and made touching pleas to benefit Haiti. Guess who wasn't allegedly invited to participate? Find out in this edition of Dina's Den. Also, find out why Beyonce herself is claiming to no longer be “fierce” in her performances...she said it, not me. Who can forget rapper Mystikal with his unique voice that made you do exactly what he said, SHAKE IT FAST! He's out of jail now after six years and has plans on returning to the industry. Lastly, what does Kandi Burruss (former Xscape member and ATL house wife reality show star) plan on doing with all that writing talent?

Hope for Haiti
The earthquake that took place in Port -au -Prince, Haiti has undoubtedly shaken the world with its devastating effects, affects and losses. Although catastrophic, the situation has pulled people together in the most positive ways to actually help a cause bigger than them, which brings us to one of many benefits for earthquake victims, Hope for Haiti.

One of entertainment's biggest names - George Clooney, alongside one of the music industry's heavy hitters, Haiti's own ride or die native - Wyclef Jean both teamed up to produce Hope for Haiti.

This telethon brought out people from all walks of Hollywood. Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Kid Rock, Cold Play, Sting, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Beyonce and Taylor Swift to name a few amongst others were present to lend their musical talents or personally share intimate stories about Haiti's survivors and the spirit of the people.

Without taking away from the tragedy at hand, Kanye West was reportedly shut down from participating in this event. According to media sources George Clooney absolutely refused to allow Kanye to have any parts of this benefit. MTV was the main organizer of this event and representatives claim that they DID approach Kanye West about performing but he was unable to. There is no telling who to actually believe but I don't think Kanye would have used this particular event as a platform to blast his personal feelings... but then again given his track record, better safe than sorry.

Overall the program was quite successful and Wyclef Jean brought the house down with the final performance for the night.

Show 'Em What You Working With.. He's Back!
After serving six years in prison for sexual assault and battery (against his hair stylist), Michael Lawrence Taylor, a.k.a. Mystikal was released on January 14th and is ready to hit the studio again to “get it in.”

Mystikal has maintained his innocence and originally denied the charges but later accepted a plea when a videotape of the incident was presented during his trial. Mystikal recently stated on a radio interview that rappers need to be more cautious: “We gotta pay more attention to what we are doing ourselves. We gotta take responsibility for what we do. We can't be foolish, especially when we are blessed and successful, we have to tighten up.” Mystikal's signature hit Shake it Fast was a crowd pleaser. Some of the musical talents that have surfaced since his incarceration, like Gucci, Lil Wayne, Drake, Kanye West, Rick Ross, all own big real estate on the bill board charts these days. It will be quite interesting to see how Mystikal pans out or who he may even team up with to make his debut back into the industry.

Nothing “Fierce” About Her
Beyonce Knowles (Carter) has used her alter ego who she named, Sasha Fierce for quite some time now after introducing her/it to her fans during concerts and then openly speaking about Sasha on interviews.

Well it's time to put Sasha Fierce to bed.... Beyonce has been standing behind her alter ego long enough and Sasha's services are no longer needed. Beyonce recently told Allure magazine that there is no alter ego anymore. “Sasha Fierce is my alter ego, this other side of me that's almost animalistic and strong and fearless, and I have used this person to take over when I'm too scared or too shy,” the singer/actress said. “The thing that's interesting is I don't need Sasha Fierce anymore, because I've grown, and I'm now able to merge the two. I want people to see me. I want people to see who I am.” She's putting on her big girl panties and growing up!

On My Own
Former Xscape member Kandi Burruss is officially signed to Asylum records and will be back on the mic. Kandi initially started out with Jermaine Dupri's ATL hit group, Xscape in the early 90's.

After the group broke up, Kandi started writing and has been quite successful throughout the years. She has written for TLC, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Pink and more.

Kandi was recently featured as one of the housewives on reality hit show “Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Not only did she add quality and spice to the show, she , (unlike the other housewives) didn't get intimidated by the very aggressive Nene Leaks who was ready to go toe to toe with anyone over and anything. Kandi, although small in stature, definitely held her own in regards to Nene's outspoken bold statements. Kandi also took a liking to colleague, house wife cast member and aspiring singer, Kim Kolciak. She penned Kim's first song "Tardy for the Party" which actually moved some numbers on iTunes.

During the taping of the season, Kandi unfortunately suffered the loss of her fiancé. Her fiancé, AJ was a club promoter and he was beat to death in a brawl.

Although nothing can replace a loved one, things are looking a little brighter for Kandi with her new project on the way. She is currently working with hit producer Jazze Pha and with her ASCAP award winning writing skills, she will be on the charts in 2010. There is plenty of new competition out there since her performing days with Xscape, only time will tell if she still performs as good as she writes.
