Kaia Peterka

by Yvette Coleman
On a cozy autumn afternoon I was able to meet with designer Kaia Peterka to gain a sneak peek of exclusive clutches and handbags. For Kaia art and travel are prominent inspirations for her collections. Her use of color and texture are eclectic, versatile, and sexy. Born in Oslo to a Norwegian mother and Czech father, Kaia has an adventurous spirit and insatiable wanderlust. Growing up with “gallerist” parents, art was always a seamless part of life. Her experiments with color and form and her eclectic perspective result in modern and original collections, well suited to everyday life or exotic adventures. These adventures have been realized when Kaia decided to hone in her skills through roles in buying, sales, strategy and consulting while taking classes at FIT and Parsons in the evenings. In anticipation of venturing out on her own, Kaia earned an MBA with Honors at Columbia University, realizing it would take more than creativity and passion to succeed.
Kaia Peterka debuted her first full collection in fall 2006. The line is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, fine specialty stores nationwide, and - - in addition to her namesake collection, Kaia has created exclusive designs for the Broadway hit, Wicked, and also creates custom pieces for private clients around the world. From clutches to large shoulder bags, the Kaia Peterka collection makes stylish living easy for even the busiest of days. The bags' cuts are elegant yet clean and simple, blunt and unapologetic in their modernity. Adding extra charm is the exquisite brocade lining inside every bag’s interior. Kaia Peterka handbags are made with care in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. The handbags are put together, largely by hand, with intense attention to detail. The close proximity between designer and maker allows Kaia to be involved in every step of the creative process. The energy of New York City is evident in every bag.
