PJ
Salvage Spring 2006
Interviewed and Written By Yvette Coleman
PJ Salvage is a contemporary loungewear company that was on
the verge of bankruptcy nearly 10 years ago. Peter Burke seized
the opportunity to breathe life into this intimate apparel
line and bring it into the forefront: it now sells in over
2,000 retailers and better end department stores. To understand
what PJ Salvage has become, you will need to know Peter. He
has an extensive background from sales to manufacturing, from
shipping to merchandising; just some of the responsibilities
that he learned while working at Durban Clothing. An international
mogul by the tender age of 27, he was named the youngest director
of a publicly owned company in South Africa.
Realizing the future growth of the industry,
he soon founded the BRM Group, a clothing manufacturing company
that produced several different lines of sportswear, swimwear,
and active wear. A few years later, he acquired the PJ Salvage
line, recognizing in it the enormous growth potential of a
booming niche category and restructuring it to perform as
a competitive brand.
PJ Salvage's success is also because the line
offers customers superior quality and fresh and innovative
looks each season. This collection has limitless potential
with a variety of loungewear and lingerie to choose from.
This season color was very important: colors for vacation
with vivid tropical shades. There were lots of embellishments
and bead work, and larger flower prints.
“We are a little bit different. We are
a contemporary line. We offer our customers [everything] right
across the board from intimates through to sleepwear right
to loungewear; we are very broad in spectrum and coming from
a sportswear background gives us the ability to think in luxury.”
The PJ Salvage signature of whimsical prints
for the season come in an array of styles, heading the numerous
picks for Spring 2006 is the Tiki Loungewear group with feather-touch
poplin and cotton in variations of dotted orchid, fuschia
and turquoise prints, pretty florals, fabulous plaids or solids.
More elaborate prints come courtesy of Tahitian Dream Floral,
Paradise Paisley, Ethnic Border, Ethnic Floral and the Indian
Summer group with a strong henna print and an elegant border
print.
As refreshing as its name, the Protofino Breeze
sets offer a delicately beautiful floral print and a classic
striped print. Bright and sunny choices are in the St. Tropez
group with florals in pink, aqua, green and stripes. The line
has also expanded its group of colorful slippers and jeweled
thongs with glimmering jewel details, tie slides with ribbon
accents, St. Tropez thongs with colorful floral prints and
Portofino Breeze Thongs with floral crocheted accents.
PJ Salvage is a premiere company for the sleep
and loungewear, blending fashion for modern lifestyles with
the use of luxuriously supple fabrics such as cotton modal,
lycra blends, micro fibers, silk and jersey. For the fall,
look for more soft luxury garment with strong influences from
Russia, and ethnic looks from India: strong colors like chocolate
browns, wine, merlot, and purple.
