Paula Hian: Louvre Fabulous

Few designers can say they have a dress on display at the Louvre, hanging near the priceless and historical Venus de Milo, Da Vinci masterpieces, and other significant works of art. But for designer Paula Hian, this honor was the beginning of her career.

Hian became interested in drawing, design and engineering at a young age, and has been sketching dresses for as long as she can remember. At age five, she was sketching bright colorful dresses for her dolls. By 10, she was designing her dream wardrobe. Hian graduated from Northwestern University in 1983 with a degree in Art History, after which she enrolled for post-graduate work in fashion at FIT.

In 1987, Hian won first prize in the International Competition of Young Designers judged by Christian Lacroix, Marc Bohan and Jean-Charles de Caselbjac, thereby reserving the winning dress a permanent space at the Louvre. After graduation, Hian designed for both Tahari and S.G. Gilbert before launching her own label in the late ‘80s.

The collections are structured around classic styles with modern twists and colorful accents – a perfect day to eveningwear for the upscale, professional woman. “I like to play with shapes, textures and colors,” Hian said. “I like to design new concepts, playing with each of these and combining them in a new, more artistic way.” Her spring 2005 collection is centered on lighter and softer colors with touches of lame and abstract collar shapes.

All the fabrics and materials used in production are found during her bi-yearly buying trips to Paris, and brought back to her factory in the U.S. In an effort to create a more direct relationship with her customer, Hian opened her own boutique in Manayunk, outside Philadelphia.

The collection ranges in pricing from tweed pencil skirts at $350 to silk satin evening gowns at $5200.
