Who Knew that Rocs Could Break..
By Odienne Chisolm
“First the Fat Boys break up and everyday I wake
up, somebody got a problem with Hov.” True Jay-Z
fans know where that line comes from but “Damon Dash
quits Rocawear,” where does that line come from?
Unfortunately it comes straight from the horses’ mouth.
Damon Dash has sold his stake of the business back for
22.5 million and controlling interest of spin-off brands
such as Team-Roc and State Property (founded by Beanie
Sigel) an estimated total value of $30 million. According
to an article in DNR magazine, Dash stated that the split
was amicable and that he’s made “too much money
to be mad at anything.” However, in the same breath
he states, “all of a sudden he wants to come to work,” in
regard to Sean “Jay-Z” Carter’s renewal
involvement in Rocawear. Dash continues, “I just
wish he would have came to work before. The company could
have been twice what it is now.” He adds, “my
vision for Rocawear was a colorless one, Jay and the other
partners want to cater more to the pure urban demographic
and that’s not the direction I wanted to go anymore,” he
concluded. .” Although Damon Dash seemed to become
the face of Rocawear, most people still associated Rocawear
with both Dash and Carter. It was the one thing that the
two still shared since Rocafella records, the original
Rocafella records is now defunct. I guess the towel has
been thrown in and every single piece of the Roc has officially
crumbled.
