291
Written by Yvette N. Coleman
Originating in Venice, CA as an artistic collaboration
between founders Christina Apostolidou,
her husband Simon Cohen, and their friend
of ten years, Matthieu Le Blan, 291 Venice
(291) launched its first collection in the spring of 2008.
Together the team conceptualized a line that reflected their
shared love of nature and a bohemian approach to
travel and leisure.
The 291 collection of tees, hoodies and bottoms was created
in the likeness and spirit of the three longtime friends
and offered a unique aesthetic - - one inspired
by the 1970’s beach culture that still pulsates
through the line’s namesake town and the global sophistication
of today’s traveler. The creative realization of 291
is a story of friendship and community told through vintage-inspired
graphics, clean, simple silhouettes and vibrant palettes.
The 291 collection draws inspiration from the modern-day
bohemian nomad, creating a look that is both
sexy and carefree, with an edge of sophistication.
Consistent attention to detail, quality and modern styling
position 291 at the forefront of casual fashion, where global
inspiration meets everyday needs.
Design Director Apostolidou and husband Cohen frequently
travel the world, allowing her to draw inspiration from
the nomadic charm of their rustic destinations. Le Blan,
291’s Creative Director and an accomplished graphic
designer, looks to his experience in fashion design and
his laid-back approach to life to form his artistry. The
three often travel together from Venice, CA—where
they all live—to Sayulita, Bali and Peru. Cohen and
Le Blan still close up shop when the sun is out and the
surf beckons.
Talk about some of the inspirations for this season
We were inspired by the culture and colors of South America,
specifically Peru, in addition to Nepal, Tibet and the Himalayas.
Who do you envision wearing this collection?
I think 291 is for anyone who feels comfortable in their
own skin, loves to travel, lives close to nature and at
the same time loves fashion.
What do you think are the biggest trends right
now?
Everything with the word “boyfriend” in it –
boyfriend t-shirts, sweatshirts, denim!
Is there a trend that bores you?
All the serious conservative looking dresses!!!
What's next for 291?
We are a lifestyle brand, so we’re definitely going
to expand our line into other categories, while staying
true to who we are.
Words of wisdom from 291:
Believe in what you want to do, stay true to your ideas
and don't lose focus by looking at other people’s
work.
