Yummie Tummie: The Cutting Edge Modern Day Shaper You Want to Wear
Written by Yvette N. Coleman
The desire to look our best in the latest fashions has brought the shape wear industry front and center. But I know the image of grandma’s girdle permeates in our minds when we think of contouring our shapes. I have tried ones that are supposed to lift and tuck, slim and trim and all I end up doing is looking for the closest ladies room in the middle of the day to strip off that restricting “daywear” that I only spent a few hours in. So is there hope?
Yes! Heather Thomson shared these frustrations and decided it was time for a change. Heather Thomson is a veteran of the fashion industry for over 16 years. She served as the Co-Creative Director for Tina and Beyoncé Knowles’ House of Deréon before leaving to create Yummie Tummie. Prior to that she was the Creative Vice President for Jennifer Lopez’s Sweetface brand and Design Director at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Sean John line.
Thomson began experimenting with various fabrics with her own sewing machine in her NYC apartment. She developed a modern shaper that could be worn comfortably without “smushing and pushing” called Yummie Tummie. She explains: “Yummie Tummie has a double meaning for me personally, because it was my brainchild after I had my first baby and the brand really began to come to fruition while I was pregnant with my second. So, it was a tribute to my babies and the belly I grew while carrying them...but mostly, Yummie Tummie is a feel good name that describes how you feel after you slip on a Yummie Tummie."
How does it work? A cotton bust and hip panel appear to the outsider as a normal tank top; meanwhile the secret midsection panel is smoothing and eliminates pounds from your appearance. Yummie Tummie is the first shaper garment that is top oriented, designed to be worn each and every day as a foundation or layering piece. The effects of Yummie Tummie are dramatic for the wearer, both physically and mentally.
Thomson adds: “Yummie Tummie was a very organic concept. I designed Yummie Tummie to fill a personal need I could not satisfy with the shaper products that were available to me. So in essence, Yummie Tummie was very much a new brand introduction with a new product concept, which actually was a perfect segue for me. Creating original brands and personalizing them using the style and the celebrity of the talent I worked for was just as big a part of my job as spearheading the design.”
So if you need to slim down and feel comfortable while doing so, Yummie Tummie is perfect for you with its discreet tanks offered in ten colors to suit your wardrobe whether your body is tight, big or small. The multi-purpose tank is great for layering, hitting the gym and all other everyday activities. Recently added are the Yummie Tummie long sleeve scoop neck and v-neck, short sleeve v-neck and scoop neck and the freedom T.
Thomson points out what is next on the horizon: “Our original design concept has both US utility and design patents pending and the sky is the limit in terms of what we can do with it. Our heads are spinning with ideas and I have visions of a new angle or opportunity each day. But for the short term, with each season, we will introduce new bodies, and seasonal color updates as well as novelty designs such as embellished neck lines and prints.”
Retail priced range between $62.00 to $82.00.
