Munki Munki 2008
Written by Yvette N. Coleman
Designer Heather Ross founded Munki Munki in
1996 anchoring her collection with strong print
designs reflective of childhood images and heartfelt
American traditions such as snuggling up to
a fire in the winter or those indelible lazy
summers with the wash drying on a clothesline
under bright sunshine and open air. Munki Munki
has successfully incorporated vintage style
with a modern appeal. Munki Munki is a play
on the word 'monkey' misspelled and repeated
as a childlike expression. The name was coined
by designer Heather Ross in order to echo the
collection's sense of idealized nostalgia, a
warm comfort in both form and function.
Spring ‘08 evokes the transformative
expression of the season with new styles and
prints as embodied by the butterfly print. Munki
Munki is in a category of its own with a strong
sleepwear collection and basic items that have
immense crossover appeal for casual wear. The
collection's prints and the designs continue
to evolve while maintaining Munki Munki’s
core brand identity. Prints continue to dominate
sleepwear. Bright colors are key and comfort
will always be a major factor in any Munki Munki
collection. The line continues to have a loyal
following, as primarily because consumers
recognize comfort and style.
Munki Munki continues to grow both as a collection
and as a brand and intends to develop the name
into a full fledged lifestyle brand.
Words of advice or wisdom from Ben Gray of
Munki Munki:
“You can never second guess the
market. Listen to your customers and always
do your best to anticipate what your buyers
and end shoppers will need.”
Munki Munki retails from $48-90 and is available
in close to 300 specialty boutiques and better
department stores nationwide including Macys
and Parisian stores.
