Carol’s
Daughter: Making Scents
Written by Yvette N. Coleman
As soon as I heard my appointment with the founder Lisa Price of Carol’s Daughter was confirmed, I knew it would be next to impossible to hide my excitement once we were face-to-face. I first heard of Carol’s Daughter when I moved to NYC in 2000. By then the handmade lotions were an underground cult classic right here in my new back yard made in the sweetest woman’s kitchen; let me introduce you to my must have and always will have Carol’s Daughter.

I walked into a piece of heaven when I entered the room where Ms. Lisa Price sat. The room was warm and rich with aroma of the newest and best selling collections. Ms. Lisa Price began the company in her Brooklyn kitchen as just a hobby, an idea. She loved mixing and experimenting with various fragrances and oils and unscented products. Soon she thirsted to learn more about the aroma therapeutic properties of oils.
At the end of her work on the hit Cosby Show, Ms. Lisa Price decided it was time to start another chapter, unknowingly the beginning of a beauty revolution. She began selling her handmade lotion in Gerber baby food jars in local flea markets, and soon the hobby became a business as people requested refills. Soon she had the Heritage Store in Fort Greene Brooklyn. Ms. Lisa Price has managed to keep her motivation high with the encouragement of family, friends, and the memories of her lovely mother Carol.
“The fun is in the discovery. The
process of figuring it all out, from the texture
to experimenting with consistency and taking
the risk and being less afraid the next time,”
notes Ms. Lisa Price
In August of 1994, Price officially established Carol's Daughter (the company lovingly named after her mother). Word spread and almost overnight celebrities like Jada Pinkett-Smith, Erykah Badu, Rosie Perez and Halle Berry became loyal customers. Her products are universal for women and men, with Lisa’s collection of oils and lotion she speaks to her African-American audience the loudest. Finally a product line that moisturizes instead of coating the skin with artificial ingredients that will leave skin dry and your pockets empty.

Ms. Lisa Price adds: “Beauty branding does not exist for the woman of color except Fashion Fair. My products are for all women but it speaks to the African American woman in a different way.”
Price is the recipient of numerous awards. She is also the author of Success Never Smelled So Sweet, a remarkable memoir that chronicles her transformation from a young black woman deep in debt and burdened by low self-esteem to the president of a multi-million dollar business.
Looking back on her years growing up in Brooklyn, Price vividly recalls her recurring connection with nature: a profound love and appreciation of the natural fragrances of the world. Price continues to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit of other women through her book, speaking engagements and business seminars.
Price and her husband and business partner, Gordon, have two sons and a daughter and live in Brooklyn. When she can find the time (between managing her business and family), Price enjoys going to the beach and to the movies.

Words of wisdom for Lisa Price founder of Carol’s Daughter:
Learn and research as much as possible, find out what your voice is going to be. I feel like I was blessed to have found my voice…I kinda stumbled into a trend. Find out what’s going to make you different and stick to it.
I felt Ms. Lisa Price’s passion and dedication throughout our meeting and when I left, I felt like I had met my hero! Her collections of fragrant lotion and oils have been in my beauty bag for many years, and I cannot wait to enjoy her upcoming collections. She confided that Carol’s Daughter plans to extend its portfolio of men’s cologne and skincare, a baby collection, possible cosmetics extension, and soon a hand and foot spa.
