House
de Lux Fall 2007
Written by Yvette N. Coleman
"HOUSE de LUX" means house of light.
The Latin word "lux" signifies the divine
light surrounding saints and holy figures. The
collection uses "lux" to refer not just
to the bold colors and signature metallic gold
they use in the clothing, but also to the idea
that when you wear HOUSE de LUX, you get to express
your own personal "light." House de
Lux brings a fresh and inspiring take on fashion
- - bringing back innovation with fashion that
is a “home free of restrictions and self
doubt.” The creator and designer,
S (Sarah Esmahan Hamady) created HOUSE de LUX
about a year and a half ago. She grew tired
of being a Philosophy professor, and wanted to
pursue her passion.
“I’ve always loved fashion
and clothes and I’ve made clothing for myself
since I was young. People asked me so often where
I got the pieces I made that I finally realized
that I wanted to pursue fashion design.”
Sarah’s use of the iconic words of George
Clinton, “free your mind and your ass will
follow, " has been the muse for the collection.
Clinton is the ultimate rebel against conformity
through his music and politics. Her collection
is boastful and not for the shy at heart.
Expect large flashy “free your ass”
statements on the back pockets of her premium denim with
just the right amount of “hug” to
fit you in all the right places. Jeans are straight
legged, with a slight flare; perfect for stilettos
or to tuck in your rider boots. S Hamady
is committed to liberation and sharing our cultural
heritage.
Her denim and ready-to-wear collections for fall
'07 were inspired by classic timeless styles elevated
to the 21st century with an “uber-cool aesthetic.”
Turtle necks and schoolgirl jacket and kilt were
updated with metallic gold accents and fierce
new tailored shapes influenced by the 70’s.
Every woman can find her inner-diva within this collection
from eye catching cat suits, gold leather outerwear,
and gold trimmed leopard overcoats. House of de
LUX envisions the “sophisticated girls and
women both in trendy downtown areas and in urban
centers who don’t mind calling attention
to themselves. HOUSE de LUX is for anyone inspired
by fun, fearless, elegant personal expression,”
says Hamady.
Devotees of House de Lux include legendary designer Patricia Field, futuristic designer Jeremy Scott, ultimate diva Amanda Lepore, and songstress Ashanti.
Words of advice from Sarah Hamady:
“I hope you’re not scared to work your tail off. The work is satisfying and really exciting at times but it is work, work, work and then more work.”
The line ranges from $60 for a printed hoody
tee to $900 for a gold leather, silk-lined winter
coat. Stay tuned to House de Lux for the
release of their full men’s collection and
their daring women’s Spring 2008 collection!
