It’s A Hairy Situation: Ecru Styles Gen Art Fresh Faces Show
Written by Kenyatta D. Pious/ Asanti Austin

Through Red PR and Melissa Barredo, we were able to take a look at the behind the scenes process of what hair stylists do in preparation for a NY fashion show. Ecru and Gen Art came together to allow young talented designer to launch a collection during the “Gen Art Fresh Faces of Fashion” showcase that took place on the first day of Fashion Week.  Ecru is a hair design team that produces the hairstyles on many of the runway shows during Fashion Week. Gen Art sponsored the following designers: April, May, Telfar, Felder Felder, ONG, Mischen, Bruno Grizzo, Sunshine & Shadow.

But what exactly is Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion Show?  Ecru explains:

Gen Art's Fresh Faces in Fashion Show is the anchor fashion program that has
debuted some of today's most notable designers including Zac Posen,
Rebecca Taylor, Shoshanna, Chaiken, Cloak, Eugenia Kim, Sari Gueron,
Hollywould and many more. Over the past decade, Gen Art has expanded
the program from New York to the top five national markets including San
Francisco (Sept 16), Chicago (Sept 25), Los Angeles (Oct 13) and Miami
(March).  [This year marks the 12th season that Gen Art has held this event].

We followed and observed as Ecru head hair stylist, Lisa Lobosco, interpreted the designers garments, and inspirations into a tangible byproduct: hairstyles.  The hair in any given fashion show should disappear and compliment the clothes, not distract. A model’s hair in most cases can deliver that final blow to a designer’s collection, showing a designers attention to detail.

On the other hand, failure to recognize the significance of a hairstyle can be a leading signifier that the designer’s message has not been translated completely.

We asked Ecru about why the company got involved with this initiative. Ecru responded:

ECRU New York is an advocate of supporting emerging creative talent, which is something that Gen Art does an excellent job of bringing awareness to. ECRU New York was created by hair stylists, who are by nature creative people, so the brand likes to support similarly creative minds. In addition to their work with Gen Art, ECRU New York stylists have also done a great deal of work with Broadway shows. For example, ECRU New York products are currently featured on the set of the hit
Off-Broadway show "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change."

The hairstyle trends this season are following fashion's general movement: a return to styling, to shape, and to form. Gone are the days of disheveled bangs, and careless ponytails. Such is the case with fashion, as we are bidding farewell to the denim saga, low rise trousers and overly distressed and deconstructed garments. Fashion has returned to classic cuts, placing an emphasis on tailoring and
structure with the garments acting as a wearable envelope encasing their wearer’s delicate figure.

We noticed during our meeting with Lisa Lobosco that while most designers had a general idea of the direction the hair should be styled, there was still a vague ambiguity that allows the whole process to remain a mystery. It is a wonder that the clothes, hair, and makeup all seem to come together so superbly on our beloved runways. Lisa Lobosco asked the designers questions, and complied with their demands of more volume, shorter lengths, and off-centered hair parts. One by one, Lisa listened and interpreted, intent on fulfilling the designers’ requests. She observed each collection, posed questions to the designers about their various models, about consistency with the hair throughout the fashion show and whether or not to add hair or hair accessories.

In turn, the designers asked questions about time requirements, dying hair on the spot and more. While some designers already laid the groundwork for Lisa, others asked for suggestions and allowed Lisa to use her experience and expertise to translate their garments’ messages.

But in the end it is all worth it.  The show went off without a hitch and models and designers we spoke with were enthralled with the job done on the hair.  “I feel so beautiful and my head doesn’t feel heavy,” one model gushed.  ECRU styled many shows during Fashion Week and it was the same results every time: sleek, chic, sexy hair - - and what’s great is that these salon styles are achievable in minutes.
