Genuine ceramic tile is carefully bezel set in high
polish sterling with a flourish of details on the backside. The
colors are reminiscent of Mexican Talavera pottery, a centuries old
pottery style. Tile pendants in the La Bonita collection are
adorned on the counter side with Mexican milagros. The word "milagro" means "miracle".
Milagros are
small religious charms that the faithful believe are endowed with
spiritual or magical powers. They are believed to heal and help restore
and preserve well-being and balance in their lives, or the lives
of those for whom they pray.
Many earrings and pendants in the collection are fashioned with
one side as a smooth cabochon stone of turquoise, onyx or green jade,
while the other side features a scene of birds or flowers that reveal
the stone beneath. The inspiration for this reversible vignette
comes from Mexico’s perforated paper designs.
In Mexico, papel
picado (perforated paper) refers to the traditional
art of decorative cut paper banners. Papel picado are
usually cut with sharp fierritos (small chisels) from
as many as fifty layers of tissue paper at a time. Designs
may incorporate lattice-work, animal figures and flowers.
Genuine stones accenting this group include a mix
of onyx, turquoise, olive jade, lapis, yellow jasper and limestone
apple coral. These bold colors summon images of a fiesta,
yet are ultimately wearable.
Some pieces are beaded with a
simple strand of onyx, while others are infused with all colors.
