OPERA Swim 2006
Written By Yvette N. Coleman
Brazilian-born Sueli Costa has been a pioneer in the
fashion
industry for years. She began as a runway model
while still in her teens in native Brazil. Continuing
her love of fashion, she attended and graduated from
the Paramount Fashion School in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil in 1988. Costa moved from Miami and opened
her first upscale boutique specializing in swimwear
and lingerie named Opera, which means
a "masterpiece." “[A masterpiece]
is what I wanted each of my swimsuits and lingerie to
look like,” says Costa.
Her boutique quickly became well known with retail
business and a favorite stop for top models, stylists
and celebrities. In 2001, she devoted herself
to growing her collection into the exclusive and sophisticated
swim brand that it has become today. For summer 2006
her inspirations come the Afro-Brazilian roots: full
of sensuality, colors and creativity. Costa has
served as a trailblazer and an inspiration to the swim
community - - whether it’s handcrafted, beaded
or has a little yellow daisy!
“Opera Swimwear stands out thanks to its high-end
and original designs, top of the line materials used
in our collections, and for its Brazilian sensual cuts
and styles,” states Costa.
Sueli Costa now devotes her time to designing her swimwear
collections, Opera Swimwear and Opera by Sueli Costa, and
a full line of beach accessories. She personally inspects
the work of her team of craftswomen and experienced seamstresses,
each one carefully chosen by Ms. Costa herself.
Sueli's most recent achievement was the Swarovski Swimwear
Project, where she was invited by the European company
to design an exclusive piece of swimwear showcased in
January 2005 in Paris during the Salon of Lingerie and
in Spain at the Moda Barcelona last February. Sueli's
one-of-a-kind piece was exhibited along with other top
designers , including Roberto Cavalli,
La Perla, Christian Lacroix and others.
Original designs, quality and creativity are the key
elements that keep Opera swimwear in the focus of prestigious
fashion magazines, news media, editorials and on the
internet which bring awareness to her collections.
Words of advice from Sueli Costa of Opera Swim:
“Be creative and ahead of time if you want to stand
up in this competitive market”
Opera swimwear can be purchased in high end specialty stores,
some online stores and starting this year, a few selected
department stores.
