Flamingo Sands 2006
Written By Yvette N. Coleman

For Jane Hages and Nicky Rowsell of Flamingo Sands, launching a swimwear collection that had a sexy high-end fashion appeal was the best opportunity to focus and hone their fashion background energies.  They gave their collection a strong personality with a fun, glamourous and exotic emphasis.

The labels name “Flamingo Sands” is an ode to Miami and Las Vegas. They even made the flamingo their signature by emblazoning its image in gold on hot pink lining of every suit!

By being highly involved in the fashion industry from marketing to design, the duo takes their cues from art, film and music.  Their world as they see it through global travel translates into beautifully crafted swimsuits.

The Spring 2006 Collection was inspired by the 50’s era of the Brat pack and luxurious hide out – Hotel Los flamingos in Acapulco, Mexico.  “We often imagine ourselves sipping on cocktails in pool bars around the world. One can only dream!”  Says Nicky.

With classic and retro aesthetics when approaching designs, Flamingo Sands’ distinct look translates into beauty, function and creativity for every garment.  “With the Flamingo Sands range we always try to create something special with everything we do… each garment comes adorned with jewelry or a trinket that can be worn separately.

The label is quirky, fun and flirty. It represents our own bizarre sense of humor.”

When asked about the good and the bad for Spring trends for 2006, Nicky and Jane had this to say:

“Bright colors and big tropical prints are always a huge trend for spring/summer. I think designers are always pulling from history and past style icons as inspiration for current collections. Expect to see swim styles influenced from the 50’s through to the 80’s. With swim - designers can always be a bit freeer to do whatever they feel like. I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules with swim design. Swim design is about great fit and proportion on the body. A swim style that looks great on one person’s body may look really bad on someone else.

As everyone’s body shape is different – there is always going to be lots of scope and creative license for swim designers to design many shapes. So general fashion trends are not as crucial to swim design.

We personally don’t get those swimsuits with the Lycra skirt. What’s up with that? Was that ever in fashion? Just a terrible look…I guess there is something out there for everyone's personal taste, style and fit. We just do what we do and don’t really follow a trend as such.   We just stay true to what we love and hope that other people will love it too.

Currently the Flamingo Sands team is working on adding sundresses, bags, sunglasses and hats that carry their signature bold colorful prints, along with swim and resort wear for ladies and men.  Look for them in Miami later this year at the SWIM trade fair. Hopefully we will see more from them in the U.S !

Words of advice from Flamingo Sands:

“You need to have a lot of drive, determination and belief in what you are trying to do. You will need patience and expect not to earn a great deal of money for at least the first few years. The fashion business is very expensive and stressful despite what you see or read! (It is not all champagne and parties!) It is a tough industry, but if you love what you do and stick at it – hopefully the reward will be well worth the effort.”
