What attracted you to fashion and how did you
start out?
It was completely spontaneous. I never thought about
it until late in my senior year of high school. Pratt Institute
visited my school to recruit interested applicants. When
they showed us a slide show about Pratt, the fashion segment
enamored me. It instantly captivated me with the
excitement and glamour of the models walking down the runway
in the students’ designs. I knew immediately this
was the path for me.
What is the hardest part about being a designer? What
makes you unique as a designer?
Trying to break into today’s industry is truly a
David vs. Goliath battle. Basically being a
one-man show. I feel my collections are an artistic
expression of myself.
Take us through a typical day in your life.
A typical day is a nonstop hustle; from visiting factories,
carrying heavy, large bags throughout the city, working
freelance, sometimes full time in the industry, buying
materials to completing the final product for store orders. I
usually take naps in the evening and work into the early
morning hours regularly. It never ends. Designing is a
continuous process with constant growth.
What forms of advertising do you rely on to get the name
out? Is it mostly word of mouth? What has been
the most successful tool for expanding your business?
At this point it is mostly word of mouth, some received
press and my website - - www.brianwoodonline.com -
- My tee shirt trunk shows have been a huge part
of my business growth as well.
Where do you see Brian Wood in the next 10 years?
In 10 years, Brian Wood will be a successful business
synonymous with unique, constant evolving creativity. Most
importantly I will be respected as an artist with an insatiable
passion for designing. |
