Step In The Name of Love
By Odienne Chisolm

How does one define a classic? Dictionary.com defines the word classic as:
a. Belonging to the highest rank or class.
b. Serving as the established model or standard: a classic example of colonial architecture.
c. Having lasting significance or worth; enduring Well, musically (R&B to be specific) when I think about people that made or make classic-type music- I think of artists like the late Barry White, The Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Patti Labelle amongst others not named. It’s pretty hard to think of today’s artists making classic music and that’s because a majority of today’s thriving talent rely on synthesizers, great looks along with well choreographed lengthy videos- to make their songs hits. There is one name that comes to my mind however, R.Kelly. Yes Robert “R” Kelly.

I know for most of us, the mere mention of his name can make you quiver. Earlier this year R.Kelly was faced with some pretty horrific sex charges involving minors- I’m talking minor minors. Coming from someone ( a female someone) that actually saw the alleged sex tapes- Iwas disgusted with him after viewing the tapes and swore him off completely. Somehow, The Chocolate Factory cd made its’ way into my music collection, so I had no choice but to listen, right?

I’m not going to review the whole Chocolate Factory CD, which I love (at least not for a second time), or tell you about all the great songs/remixes Robert Kelly is responsible for this year (R.Kelly: “Thoia Thong” The Big Tymers : "Gangsta Girls - featuring R Kelly" Ginuwine : "Hell Yeah”- remix, featuring R Kelly/Baby/Clipse B2K: “Girlfriend”- RKelly remix” and the list goes on) but I will say, that the one song that stands out as a classic is “Step In The Name of Love.”

The melodies and lyrics of this song, tend to put you in a good mood regardless of your present emotional state. It’s a song that definitely bridged the age gap. From 14-65, every R&B fan can truly enjoy it. Hats off to R.Kelly, for not forgetting how to make real, “let’s get together and just have pure fun” music!!
